tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-42666974314450665372024-03-14T07:16:47.818-04:00The Farmers Market at Attleboro FarmsThe Farmer's Market at Attleboro Farms began on January 10th, 2010 at Attleboro Farm and Garden on Hickory Road. North Attleboro.
What was a 3 month winter run is now year-round every Sunday from 12 noon to 4 PM at Attleboro Farms. While not the biggest farmers market out there, we have loyal and supportive farmers, artisan food makers, crafters and most importantly "shop-orters",( people that spend their money with local farmers and artisans and support LOCAL).Unknownnoreply@blogger.comBlogger23125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4266697431445066537.post-42873116140345428522012-05-30T12:39:00.000-04:002012-05-30T12:39:45.102-04:00An Abundance of Farmers MarketsAs Memorial Day has come and gone, heralding the traditional start of summer so come the seasonal farmer markets in towns throughout New England. Markets are opening daily with varying selections of produce, plants and wonderful local foods, the selection will grow more diverse as the summer progresses into the peak harvest of fall, slowly tapering off as we near early November and the season's end.

By all means patronize as many markets as is practical, relish the earths bounty in all it's magnificent flavor, but do consider that if you can only shop-port one market remember the one that is open year round as our farmers and producers come year-round with as much as they can and your continued patronage is critical to their livelihood.

As always thanks for coming out and shop-porting all of our farmers and producers.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4266697431445066537.post-30989420372096422612012-05-05T11:19:00.000-04:002012-05-05T11:19:25.120-04:00Updates should be more frequent nowI have been lazy when it comes to updating the blog for the Farmers Market at Attleboro Farms,(and I forgot the password too.) But I promise going forward that I will keep things more current and hopefully more interesting.
Farmers Markets are currently the "Flavor of the Moment" around the USA, which is a good thing when they are in fact serving Farmers, Shoppers and the Community as a whole. Simply put a well run successful farmers market provides a regularly scheduled opportunity for farmers to sell directly to shoppers in a congenial environment. This gives shoppers access to the fresh food, the person(s) who grew it and farmers direct contact with the shoppers.
Of course if you have a Farmers market today without a baker or 2, jams and jelly makers, a smattering of locally made crafts, you will probably not patronize it. Shoppers want variety in their farmers market, a market will be successful if it can achieve a solid balance that pleases everyone,(shoppers, farmers/vendors, the community at large).

Rest assured we are always looking to add variety when it makes sense, Local wines are an example; but recognize that our loyal farmers and artisan producers need to make a living too, so often we say no to someone until the market shoppers are there to support them.

I will try to keep the posts current and add some photos or video too. Ideas welcome and keep telling you friends and neighbors and co-workers to stop by on Sundays to get local with our great group of folks.

Thanks,
The local farm and food movement is certainly strong in Rhody and regionally as well. I had the opportunity to engage a few fellow participants and thought almost all of them were passionate about what they are doing, a refreshing change from my former corporate world.
My overriding concern is the focus on the "food deserts" and driving sales of fresh in those areas with SNAP, EBT, WIC, etc.. I'm not opposed to any of these programs or the need to improve the diet of these communities, the upside in health and reduction in associated costs would be a good thing; I am struggling with the lack of effort/funding to increase fresh local sustainable food to the rest of the population, the larger group that has the ability to choose because they have the income to do so.
If farms are to survive and expand,(more small sustainable farms, not large industrial ones) there needs to be a allocation of resources to make that happen. The Farmers market has to be a year round part of the shopping experience, an incentive to make it a habit rather than a novelty stop in the day. Farmers new and old have to make a fair income for what they produce, they should not earn at a level that would qualify them for SNAP.
The CSA business model is one way to drive farm income up without forcing industrialization. What other ideas are out there? The Public Market, can it stand alone or does it need to be quasi governmental? Local food in the schools, schools growing their own?
I put this out there to encourage discussion and exchange of ideas, let the thinking begin.
Of course there is more than that, there is music, there is soap and body oils, dog treats, cats too. There are children running around and laughing, old friends running into each other unexpectedly. There are samples of all types, you could have a nice lunch with those alone; there are the people who grow or produce what they are selling.
The winter market is a community event, spend nothing or spend a lot, get to know the people who grow/make good food. I'll spare you the rants I have on the current "cheaper is better" food system, suffice it to say shopping for food this way is more fun. It will also make you appreciate the entire process of growing and producing food on a local sustainable level.
Whether you shop here in North Attleborough or visit the other winter markets: Pawtucket, Natick, Wayland or the 100's throughout New England, do shop them as often as possible,do talk to the growers, the bakers, the butchers, jelly makers, cheese makers. If you only have time to say one thing, say this:
Thank you for doing what you do.
Oh do try to buy something too.
Thank you for reading the blog and shopping the markets.
This is a separate venture from the DANA sponsored summer market and is set up to be a free standing business. If you know of vendors who may be interested please encourage them to contact me so I can answer questions etc.

More details to come stay tuned!!

David

Potential Winter Market Downtown NA:

I am looking for Growers and Producers to populate a NEW winter market (indoors) in North Attleborough MA. I plan on running the Market on Sunday Afternoons from November thru April, possibly May. Anticipated times are either 12-3 or 4 or 1 to 4 or 5. I am offering either 4 foot or 8 foot spaces at $10 or $20 per week, with a one time start up fee of $15 or $30. It's possible that if I have enough interest I may offer a full season rate a a discount. There are 26 potential dates, No markets for 12/27, 1/3, 4/4, 5/9.

There are approx 14 8 ft spaces or 28 4 ft spaces. I am encouraging vendors to share spaces as it will increase variety which in turn should increase the allure of the market.

The ground rules for the market are as follows: (Subject to change)

1 Vendors are responsible for the appropriate licensing, insurance, sales taxes.
2 Vendors are to provide their own tables, equipment etc. NO COOKING allowed.
3 Vendors are to be the growers and/or producers and goods sold are to be from within 200 miles of North Attleborough. This is a Local Market supporting local growers and producers.
4 In the event of inclement weather and cancellation of the market fees paid will be applied to the next market date, no refunds will be given.
5 Vendors may sell NON-Edibles if they are locally produced and agriculturally based, ex. beeswax candles, soaps, goat milk soaps, aroma therapy, wool.

This is a market in progress so I invite suggestions as well as participation. I may be contacted at dsca995@cs.com, 508 409 1534 or you can visit me Saturdays at the Downtown North Attleborough Farmers Market from 9 am to 12 noon,(I suggest you call 1st to make sure I'm there). I am also available to visit you at your farm or facility. I also have a blog at nafarmersmarket.blogspot.com where I like to talk up local producers.

Thanks for your support,
David ScanlanUnknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4266697431445066537.post-45560289172614879922009-09-27T07:24:00.002-04:002009-09-27T07:39:02.805-04:00Downtown Saturday September 26Wow, what a great day in downtown North Attleborough. The weather was perfect for the first weekend of fall, balmy and sunny. The farmer's market was rockin', I don't think we have ever been busier, so much so we all stayed for at least an hour past the normal close. Thanks to all who stopped by to buy, check it out, chat or just take a look see; come on back every saturday thru Halloween.

Saturday was a great example of a vibrant downtown, we had the farmer's market, football, library book sale and the arts fair all going on at pretty much the same time. Sure there was fair amount of traffic, but overall you could find a place to park,(free) and spend a few hours shopping, eating and being entertained. I think that is a pretty good value. In closing I would urge everyone to support your downtown and the local merchants by continuing to visit and shop there. If you can buy in downtown you are making a greater positive economic impact then if you are buying elsewhere.
As saturday illustrated so well, a busy, excited, creative downtown can be a lot of fun; let's keep it going.
DavidUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4266697431445066537.post-24091892297017337632009-09-21T20:58:00.004-04:002009-09-21T21:26:15.482-04:00Big Weekend coming up In Downtown 9/26Well first and foremost there is the Downtown Farmer's Market Saturday from 9AM to Noon, but here is what else is happening:

Richards Memorial Library Annual book Sale at the Masonic Temple Friday - Saturday, check the library's web site for more info: http://rmlonline.org A great way to support a great institution and build a library of your own. It doesn't get much greener than buying used books.

The Village Artisans Collaborative is sponsoring The Autumn Arts Festival on Sat and Sun from 10AM to 4PM in Veterans Park, directly in front of town hall across from the post office. I would expect to see a wide variety arts and crafts,(think holidays!) and right now the weather looks good for both days. As always you can also visit the VAC Store in Downtown as well.

Saturday is also Pop Warner football at Community Field with games starting at 10:30AM going as late as a 7:30pm start. Along with the games there are raffles and a pretty good concession stand.

Of course there is a whole bunch of restaurants in downtown to choose from and a variety of stores that would certainly appreciate a few more shoppers.

Celebrate the first weekend of fall, by getting fresh and getting around downtown North Attleborough. Oh yeah tell your friends too!!

See ya at the market!

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4266697431445066537.post-79479086847573074282009-09-13T11:07:00.002-04:002009-09-13T11:23:39.833-04:00Market Report Sept 12This past Saturday was interesting, I had sent an e-mail to all on the list reminding that we would have a market Sat am as I didn't think the rain would be too bad. I woke up around 5AM to torrential rain and sighed the "Oh S*#T" when face with bad weather for an outdoor event. I watched the weather and didn't get any positive reinforcement on that front nor from the web.
Around 7:15 I called Oakdale Farms and was told that Mike was on the way, the decision made I loaded up the SUV and headed downtown. We decided to double our tents as well and modified the layout of the tables to keep what few customers I expected dry. FYI Veggies can get wet, duh!

I really didn't think we would do too much, but we were soon joined by Attleboro Farms,(with a great display of fall decor and beautiful mums), a few hours later by Nolin's Apiary, (labels don't do well in the rain). Well turned out that even in somewhat cruddy weather people come out.

Overall with the state of the weather the market had a pretty good turnout. It's important to open the market as scheduled to provide consistency for both customers and vendors. A lesson that was reinforced to me yesterday. It's also good to know that the customers who support the market every week won't let a little rain scare them away, thanks again for your support.

I continue to look for space to maintain a market through the winter and early spring and a day like yesterday only serves to reinforce my efforts.

I'll keep you posted on that and other things I'm working on. Take care and Eat Local.

DavidUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4266697431445066537.post-50503690139853727752009-08-28T16:07:00.002-04:002009-08-28T16:15:23.348-04:00No Market August 29 Return Next WeekWell looks like this will be the first missed market of the season, hopefully the only missed one.
The weather is just too dicey to go ahead, I'm thinking safety..high winds and canopies are a bad mix. I heard last weeks market was pretty well attended so a one week miss should be bearable.

I just got back from a Northern VT vacation, had a real good time. Of course I had to eat while I was there so I visited a few markets. You can definitely tell that our neighbors to the north are real loca-vores. The selection was vast and the markets were generally pretty well attended. I had some good food and the vendors were excited about what they had to sell.

I think given some time we will be approaching that level of excitement and selection; keep spreading the word.

See you next week!!

DavidUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4266697431445066537.post-34718935660698532322009-08-14T15:15:00.002-04:002009-08-14T15:22:18.398-04:00Market Forecast Sat 8-15-2009This week looks to see a repeat of last weekends great weather and bountiful selection.
I would remind everyone that this is Jam Good's last week at market so if you like her jams and jellies stock up. On Saturday the 29th the location will shift to the grassy area on the south side of the current location. There is a car wash booked in the late morning and early afternoon so we need to move. We will probably do this a few more times as school opens and other events previously booked occur.
I continue to look for additional vendors as well as entertainment,(preferably some form of non-electrically powered music); so if anybody knows of any of the above please let me know.
See you at the market!!
Buy Local!
DavidUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4266697431445066537.post-38778840799667897432009-08-07T12:53:00.004-04:002009-08-07T13:06:14.971-04:00Market Forecast for 8/8/09I expect we'll see a beautiful day Saturday morning as well as a similar variety of fruits and veggies to last week. I am going to check with the farmers to see what they will be bringing and plan on posting on Thursday afternoon, so check back then. I have posted some pictures of what was available Saturday, we are getting some good stuff in what has been a tough growing season.

See you at market, and I'll be downtown Tuesday night for the Block party, right by Shirley's, stop by and say hi.

David ScanlanUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4266697431445066537.post-87644861203832818462009-07-21T15:34:00.000-04:002009-07-21T15:42:31.380-04:00Welcome To The North Attleborough Farmers MarketDowntown North Attleborough now has a weekly Farmer's Market, every Saturday from 9-12 noon at Community School right out front.
